Project Overview

Rapid Needs Assessment in the Aftermath of the Earthquakes

As a component of the project on human rights compliance in agricultural supply chains, the Rapid Needs Assessment (RNA) study was carried out to identify urgent needs to improve the living and working conditions of seasonal migrant workers in the aftermath of the 6 February 2023 earthquakes that affected Türkiye and to identify context-specific human rights risks that may occur in agricultural supply chains. The purpose of the RNA is to assist in the development of an effective response strategy and to help prevent additional loss and disruption by ensuring that resources are directed where they are most needed.

In addition to the serious loss of life, the earthquakes caused a significant reduction in economic activity in the affected areas due to the destruction or damage of businesses and loss of labour force. This situation, which caused a serious contraction in the regional economy and requires a long-term recovery process, carries the risk of worsening working conditions in supply chains, increasing child labour and occupational health and safety risks, and posing a serious threat to the ecosystem and human health in the region.
