Occupational Health & Safety

As defined by the International Labor Organization, the field of occupational safety and health includes creating better working conditions and environments to ensure the safety and health of workers in the course of their duties and includes compensation provisions in the event of work-related injuries.

Türkiye is a party to various International Labour Organization conventions on occupational health and safety, in addition to its obligations to ensure fair and favourable working conditions under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. At the national level, the obligations of employers to ensure occupational health and safety at the workplace and to improve existing health and safety conditions are regulated by Law No. 6331 on Occupational Health and Safety.

In Türkiye, despite detailed provisions in the existing legal framework, occupational accident and occupational disease rates remain high due to deficiencies in the implementation of occupational health and safety measures, lack of effective supervision and insufficient sanctions. Indeed, according to Eurostat data, Türkiye ranks first among the European Union countries with the highest number of people killed in work accidents in 2021.

BHRTR's engagement in occupational health and safety goes beyond mere monitoring and reporting to include a comprehensive approach that integrates occupational health and safety risks into the human rights due diligence process.

BHRTR actively addresses risks through diligent examination of workplace conditions, ensuring that potential hazards are rigorously assessed, especially in supply chains in sectors where occupational health and safety risks are prevalent, such as industry, manufacturing and agriculture. In parallel, we offer a comprehensive assessment of risks outside the workplace, especially in sectors such as agriculture, where working and living conditions are closely intertwined.
