Occupational Health & Safety

Türkiye is a party to various International Labour Organization conventions on occupational health and safety, in addition to its obligations to ensure fair and favourable working conditions under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. At the national level, the obligations of employers to ensure occupational health and safety at the workplace and to improve existing health and safety conditions are regulated by Law No. 6331 on Occupational Health and Safety. In Türkiye, despite detailed provisions in the existing legal framework, occupational accident and occupational disease rates remain high due to deficiencies in the implementation of occupational health and safety measures, lack of effective supervision and insufficient sanctions. Indeed, according to Eurostat data, Türkiye ranks first among the European Union countries with the highest number of people killed in work accidents in 2021.
